CAR AND TRAIN
WOMAN DRIVER'S DEATH COMMENT AT INQUEST (0.C.) MATAMATA, this day. A verdict, that death was the result of injuries received when the car she was driving accidentaly came into collision with the FranktonRotorua train at Broadway crossing in Matamata, was returned by the coroner, Mr. A. J. Tong. J.P., following an inquiry into the death of Miss Emily Howard, of Rotorua. The coroner added that he was satisfied that no blame was attachable to the driver or fireman of the train.
It appeared from the evidence of the passenger in the car that the deceased and her passenger, who were strangers to the locality, did not even know the crossing was there and consequently did not look out for any trains. The coroner further commented that this was the second fatal accident which had occurred at this crossing. "Something more should be done in the way of improving the warning devices to prevent further accidents "
