CALLED UP
DISCHARGED AIRMAN
RESPONSIBILITY DISCLAIMED (0.C.) SYDNEY, Sept. 28. Manpower and Allied Works Council officials are both disclaiming responsibility for the calling up by the Works Council of a returned air force officer named Stanley Cox, who has been discharged medically unfit after having served in the Middle East and Greece, and after having spent 14 weeks in hospital from wounds. Mr. Cox said he would rather go to gaol than be conscripted, and refused to be medically examined or to appeal against this callup. The matter is to be discussed by the Returned Soldiers' League, but, in any case, it has already received so much publicity that it is not the least likely that Cox will actually be called up.
Another case of apparent hardship is that of Constable A. J. Willcox, who was refused permission to enlist by the police department, secured his pilot's license at his own expense and then joined the R.A.A.P. without having obtained permission from the police department. He was then dismissed for having been absent from duty. This means that he will lose his superannuation rights and also all the money that he has paid into the fund. The secretary of the police association has lodged an appeal against the constable's dismissal.
