UNIONISM
Unionism is a form of protection originally instituted to protect Hi members from abuse and to uriptwfe the conditions and safeguard tilt workman in his daily toil. never intended to cause class distiv tion as closed unions do, nor to Ima means of extorting increased still more pay as it has now degnerated to in the Arbitration Cut.
Compulsory unionism is its worstii latest form of conscription, and nffl it is modified or abolished there ss always be trouble. Increased wages without increased production siw increases the cost of living. Untuii is recognised that supply and denoßi rule prices, and wages are the arte of production and not time, labour troubles will continue. Increased wages without increased production is just a boomerang that increptß the cost of living. Piecework orjay ment by results was abolished by ibis present Government. It is now time that "time" work was abolished,*? it has failed in our freezing woite on the wharf, and in the mines, and that payment by results be recognised as the only just way of IJUBv ness.
