WOMEN'S HOME
CAUGHEY PRESTON BEQUEST Permission to establish a home for aged, infirm or impecunious women on a property of 7i acres in Upland and Ventnor Roads, Remuera, was granted to the trustees of the late Mrs. Marianne Caughey Preston by the City Council last night. Mrs. Caughey Preston, formerly Mrs. W. H. Smith, who died in September, 1938. leaving an estate valued at under £150.000, bequeathed the residue, estimated at £200,000 or more, together with an endowment of £20,000 and part of a Heme Bay property, for the establishment and maintenance of a rest home for women, admission to be irrespective of religious beliefs. The city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, stated that the property was owned and occupied by Mrs. A. L. Wilson, and included a large two-storeyed wooden house. The trustees proposed to convert this into suitable accommodation. Each resident would have a room of her own, with bed recess and scullery.
