WASTE MATERIAL
SUCCESSFUL DRIVE
FIVE TONS FROM WESTMERE
An object lesson in what can be done in the collection of waste material was provided on Saturday afternoon when a load of five tons was collected from five streets in Westmere in the space of three hours.
The drive was organised by the Westmere branch of the Communist Party of New Zealand, and, with the assistance of a number of residents of the district, and a two-horse lorry owned by Ernest and Herbert Craig, Limited, a thorough canvass of the streets from Warwick Street to William Denny Avenue was made. Among the material collected were 65 heavy motor car and truck tyres, two dozen bicycle tyres, 100 feet of hose, 18 hot water bottles, 50 pairs of rubber sandshoes and sandals, six sacks of paper and books, two gas stoves and a quantity of lead, brass and aluminium.
It is understood that the branch is continuing the drive each week-end throughout the district.
