CHERRY'S TICKET

JELLICOE SUCCESS

SURPRISES IN DIVISIONS

The Pakuranga Hunt Club's meeting was held at Ellerslie to-day in fine weather. The course was a little holding and there was a good attendance.

The Surveyor gelding Comric was sent out only fourtn in the order of betting in the Greenmount Hunters' Steeplechase, but he easily proved himself superior to better backed horses. He jumped well throughout the journey and. after alternating in the lead with Smooger over the final round, came away in the straight to win by half a dozen lengths. As a matter of fact, these two horses always appeared from the commencement of the final miie likely to fight out the issue for first place. Accidents occurred early, Gay Alma falling at the first fence, and Persistence and Ika Moana at the third fence. With half the journey covered, Abbey Lu, which had been the pacemaker, compounded suddenly, and Comrie and Smooger drew out with a big lead from Red Falcon and Glen Donal. Abbey Lu fell on the hill the second time and Smooger and Comrie came down the hill a dozen lengths clear of Red Falcon, which plugged along to take third 15 lengths behind Smooger. Sir Waimai was next, with Little Captain the only other horse to finish. Favourite Falls The Te Rapa trained Town Survey was backed down to a short price for a win in the Harris Memorial Hack Hurdles, due to the fact that lie had been schooling brilliantly at Te Rapa. He was always in a handy position and had every chance, but his fencing was patchy, and when he put in a run and looked like being troublesome he came to grief at the second last fence. Flylite was some distance from the leaders over the first mile, but commenced to move up half a mile from home, and finishing very solidly, got the better of Surpeen, which had been in charge over the last mile. Venture jumped well and was always in the picture. Wildore had every show, but never looked like threatening to take part in the finish. Runanga came to grief at the first fence and the others were never in the danger zone. Division Winners The Sylvia Park Handicap was run in divisions, the first going to Aguilo, which took the verdict off Silver Note in the last few strides. Many onlookers thought that Silver Note had prevailed, but the judge gave it to Aguilo hy a head. Transcend, Naini Tal, Peter Gregor and Water Fox raced in a bunch behind Silver Note into the home stretch, and at the half distance Aguilo came through very smartly, while Foxlore also challenged. The last named failed by a length and a half for second.

A very promising Mr. Standfast three-year-old, Lord Chancellor, having his first race, was responsible for a very effective effort to take the second division. Incidentally he gave Mr. A. J. Court a welcome change of luck. He did not begin well, but soon developed speed to run into fifth position at the quarter mile. Kinstep, which had been the pacemaker, was still in front as they came down the straight, but in the last half furlong Lord Chancellor asserted his superiority to win easily in the last 30 yards. Sir Reynard ran an encouraging race to take third place just ahead of Prince Rewa and Mihinui, both of which had been prominent. Stylishman was sixth. An Impressive Win The four-year-old Cherry's Ticket, hitherto successful over sprint courses, won her first mile race today, and she won it impressively. This was the Jellicoe Handicap, the principal flat race of the meeting. As usual, the Croupier mare began we U' , an d the field had no sooner settled down than she took up second position behind Radiant Vaals. Directly the home stretch was reached Gilchrist sent Cherry's I lcket along, and she had the measure of the leader at the half distance. After that she went on to a comfortable victory by half a length, rising Acre finished strongly to just fail to deprive Radiant Vaals ot second place. Sir Dingle, a fancied lightweight, was the first to take the e > but Radiant Vaals quickly went i r 7,l r ° u Sh on the rails to lead Cherry's i 1 lcket at the half mile by two j lengths. Karatoki, Sir Dingle and I H?" i S ' r*e\ng together, were close handy ahead of Sir Cameron and Fox. Once straightened up for the final run to the judge. Regal Fox challenged and so also did Lovaals. Kegal Fox ran out a bit towards the end and ultimately finished fourth hung on and wa s ?ii a len Sth clear of Pav i ? ir Din e le - Bonny Pay, the champion two-year-old of and finished bTck^bm si'sas." siisfit,y ™* Results:— GREE «50 CNT Ab^t^ R^ lle fY» E a PL a E^,t.
