ARMY SERVICE

FURTHER BALLOT

MARRIED MEN 35 TO 37

(0.C.) WELLINGTON, Monday. Additional men are to be called up next month for service in the armed forces. The Minister of National Service, Mr. Broadfoot. said to-night that this ballot would contain the names of men of 35. 36 and 37 years of age with children, together with the inflow into classcs previously called up for military service. "Approximately 21.000 men will be called up on this occasion and the names will be gazetted on September 10," said the M inister. "The men will be medically examined as soon as possible, but no indication can at present he given when they will be required to enter camp." Mr. Broadfoot said the withdrawal of more men from industry to cntc' - the forces would necessitate the application of measures for industrial reorganisation designed to offset these losses, in so far as they affected* the more essential industries. Further and more drastic curtailments of non-essential industries and services were inevitable. Up to the end of July, he added, more than 5000 persons had been directed into essential industries, while more than 2000 essential workers who would ordinarily have left these industries were prevented from doing so by application of the terms of the National Service Emergency Regulations.

In order to ensure that these and related measures for nationalisation and reorganisation of industry, and mobilisation of the Dominion's labour reserve, were carried out with the maximum effectiveness, the War Administration had plans in hand at the present time involving the complete examination of industries and services.

"This . examination." said the Minister, "will be merely the prelude to an acceleration of measures designed to meet the needs of the armed forces, while at the same time maintaining those ' industries and services, which are essential to the community."
