OBITUARY

j MISS E. M. BYCROFT The death has occurred of Miss Elizabeth Mildred Bvcroft, aged 90, for many years an officer in the Salvation Army. Born in Auckland, Miss Bycroft was the only daughter of Mr. John Bycroft, pioneer flour miller and founder of the present business of Bycroft, Limited. Her father arrived in Auckland in 1841 and built and operated the old stone windmill in St. Andrew's Road, Epsom. Later he purchased a water mill at Onehunga in 1854. After his death in 1878, one of his sons transferred the business to Auckland, and in 1885 a limited company was formed.

Miss Bycroft joined the Salvation Army more than 50 years ago, not long after its establishment in New Zealand. She served successfully as a social officer in various Australian and New Zealand centres, attaining the rank of adjutant. Since her retirement she had been living with relations in Auckland. Miss Bycroft was the last of the children of the founder of Bycrofts, Limited, and was also an aunt of Mrs. W. J. Jordan, wife of the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London.
