AN ANOMALY
TRANSPORT WORKERS' WAGES
CORRECTION SOUGHT Much perplexity has been occasioned the Auckland Transport Board as the result of an anomaly which appears to have occurred in a judgment given by the Arbitration Court about the end of June of this year. This judgment arose from an application from the board for exemption from certain wage increases of certain sections of the board's employees. * The effect of this judgment was to make the increased pay available to some 80 per cent of the board's employees, excluding some 20 per cent of the lower paid members— this being described as the opposite of what the board had desired.
The board had been advised by its solicitor that some mistake had apparently occurred in that the writen order from the Court did not seem to agi-ee with the verbal judgment which had been given. The matter was referred to the board's finance committee so that, in conjunction with their solicitor, they might draw up recommendations, for consideration at next board meeting, as to the proper steps to be taken to have the position corrected.
