In the match played here on June 20 Auckland won 23—11. but with the advent of the 1938 All Black scrum half. Saxton. the soldiers hope to take revenge this week. He last played here on September 9. 1939. when he led Southland to victory, 16—14, in one of the most sensational games ever staged in the North.
Third Grade Trial.—Players invited to attend at Gribble-Hirst Park at 1.30 on Saturday for a Probables v. Possibles game for the selection of Auckland's third grade representatives. Middleton, Takapuna; J. Slowman, N. Kelly, R. Hickey. F. Rogers, G. Burton. B. Jaffe, D. Wallace, M. Goldsmith, Grammar; R. Higgins, R. Lepper. R. Hall. F. Sergeant, B. Penman, Northcote: Moxom, Wyllie. Jonson. Training College; Warring. Reeves, Technical; D. Leggett, J. Stanley, B. Smith, J. Erklia, E. Hensen. ParnellTamaki.
Fluctuating Fortunes.—Fortunes certainly fluctuated in the match between C.R.O. and M.T.P.. end the latter was unlucky in not taking the honours as it scored four tries against three penalty goals and a try. On this occasion the position was reversed, as it was goal-kicking which won the day for M.T.P. when the teams met in the first round. The game was played at a fast pace throughout, in soite of numerous penalties. The C.R.O. side, with the forwards in ihe van. went straight to the attack, and its fast-raiding tactics, with up-and-under kicks, had the opposition very 'troubled. Later the M.T.P. vanguard was also troublesome in the loose, and especially in its support of the rearguard in passing. M.T.P. held the advantage In hooking the ball, while the Inside backs were far more dangerous than those of the opposition.
Two Fine Tries.—Two fine tries came the way of each side. In the first spell Boggs. the C.R.O. wing, made a splendid run from a blind side movement and beat Scott, the M.T.P. full-back, badly. Towards the close of the play Briggs, M.T.P. half-back, who played a fine all-round game, left the opposition standing in a run from the scrum. Briggs had great support from his two outside men. W. Tittleton and Gregory, who were ever on the alert, it was surprising, however. to see the M.T.P. barks indulge in so murh kicking, which was quite a new phase of their play. The side would undoubtedly have clone much better at times oy retaining possession. Anderson played an outstanding game in the M.T.P. vanguard, and Mills and Reid were ever In the picture for C.R.O.
