ATTEMPTED THEFT
LABOURER SENT TO GAOL (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. Found in a room in a private hotel holding a purse, Robert Kaweka aged 23. a labourer, admitted in the \Yhangarei Police Court to-dav having attempted to steal 2/ in money and was sentenced by Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M.. to a month's imprisonment with hard labour. Detective-Sergeant J. B. Finlav said that a woman employed at the hotel went to her room and found Kaweka standing at the dressing table with her purse in his hand He inquired for the other occupant of the room, but was unable to explain what he was doing with the purse, and had run off. Located bv the police last evening, he admitted being in the room, but denied intention to commit theft. After perusing Kaweka s list the magistrate imposed the sentence.
