OFFICIALLY OPENED
NEW SERVICE CLUB
The Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, at the opening ceremony on Saturday night, described the new Catholic Services Club in Pitt Street, as a most welcome addition to the amenities provided for the care and entertainment of servicemen. Official guests at the ceremony included: Major-General P. H. Bell, D.5.0., conmandant of the Northern Military District, Rear-Admiral D. J. Callaghan, United States Navy, representing Admiral R. L. Ghcrmley, commanding the South Pacific Area, Mr. H. A. Boucher, United States Consul, Mr. Justice Callan, and representatives of the various patriotic councils, including suburban Mayors. Mr. J. P. O'Connor was chairman.
The new club from now on will be open from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily, including week-ends and a weekly dance will be organised. The club is under the auspices of the Catholic Soldiers' Welfare Committee, the first chaplain being the Rev. Father A. P. Curran. The management is under a local committee with Mr. J. P. O'Connor president, and Mr. G. J. Browne chairman, assisted by a women's committee, of which the convener is Mrs. N. Abbott.
