WATER SPOUT FREEZES
The bursting of a water main following a particularly heavy frost at Hanmer recently treated visitors and residents to a rare spectacia. Such was the pressure of the water that it spurted some 20ft up into a pine tree. The water immediately froze ; transforming the pine needles into icicles, while a wire fence below was coated with ice to the thickness of a sausage. The "bush telegraph" system was soon working and a crowd gathered to see what was undoubtedly a fine and unusual spectacle.
