DISAPPOINTED One of the costly disappointments at the Northern meeting was Whackie. When the three-year-old son of Arausio won two hark events at Trentham earlier in the season, big things were predicted, for him. and it was expected that he would be quite capable of holding his own in open company. At Ellersiie he was nicely placed In the open sprint each day, but did not put a great deal of dash into his finishing efforts, and failed to gain a place. BADLY AWAY The Hunting Song gelding Gold Money Song is not over-raced, and because of excellent track work he was sent out win favourite for the Visitors' Handicap on Saturday, his only appearance at the meeting. Unfortunately for his supporters, he was not well served at the start and was slow away. With the leaders clapping the pace right on, Gold Money Song failed to make up much of his leeway, and he never threatened to take part in the finish. DID NOT STAY Transmitter had registered some attractive gallops in training prior to the Northern meeting which suggested that the son of Vaals would race prominently. He showed plenty of speed In his races, but did not go on in the straight, and was well beaten at the judge each time. A SPEEDY HACK The speed displayed by Kinstep in the Members' Handicap will not be forgotten when the son of Kincardine steps out in a hark event. There is no question about his brilliancy, and if produced at the Hawke's Bay meeting he will have plenty of supporters. WIN WELL DESKRVED The victory of Marble Fox in the Fitzrov Handicap, first division, was well deserved The Foxbridge filly, who was turned out in great condition bv J. Tutrhen has been racing unluckily for some time,' and her defeats were in the main due to her being slow away from the barrier. In the r#ce she won Marble Fox lumDed off well, and at the finish had th«Toppos!tion well beaten. She looks like being a useful sort capable of \\ inning over middle distances. A SOLID CUSTOMER Although Cambria has not won many races he is a solid customer, and takes beating whenever he steps out. In his winning effort when he took a division of the York Handicap, he jumped out much faster than usual, and soon hit the front and ealloping well, he was never headed. The son of Cambria Park has held his condition remarkably well throughout the season, which says much for his trainer. F Smith. Cambria should be a fine stake winner next season as a four-year-old. ARCTIC DAWN PAILS When G. Ridgway left Riccarton to tour the northern meetings with Streamline and Arctic Dawn, it was confidently expected he would win a race or two on the trip, but each failed in their engagements. although Streamline finished second In the Great Northern Hurdles. Arctic Dawn was something of a disappointment, but nevertheless he is a useful galloper, and being a big gelding, it will not be surprising to find him racing over hurdles in the near future. While at Ellersiie for the winter meeting he was schooled over pony hurdles and shaped well.
