BAN LIFTED The ban on horses travelling to race meetings by rail in England has been lifted for the flat racing season. Journeys by road will be limited to 45 miles. ELIMINATE MAIDENS With the reduction in the number of racing days there has been a nitur:il tendency on the part of owners to seize every opportunity of ra.'ing their horses, with the result that JieiUs are attaining awkward dimensions. to the iroblem now confronting clubs was made at the annual meeting of the Marton Jockey Club by Mr. J. It. L. Stanford, who stated that he did not favour balloting as a method of reducing fields, on the grounds that it would be unfair to owners who had travelled a distance to attend a racing circuit. Under that system there was a danger of a horse being balloted (out for two or three successive meeting#. A fairer way would be to frame the conditions so as to eliminate maidens where their presence might result In increasing the field beyond the safety limit. LADY CALLAGHAN'S SUCCESS Ladv Callaghan, winner of the Grandstand "Steeples on Saturday at the Wanganui meeting, was successful in the same race two years ago, and last year took the Wanganui Steeplechase.
