EGGS IN AUCKLAND

BLACK MARKET ALLEGED MINISTER'S STATEMENT (0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Complaints that they were being penalised by their loyalty to organised marketing In having to send egKs tf> Wellington were made by a deputation of Chrlstchurch commercial eRK producers Who waited on the Minister of Marketing, Mr. Barclas*. They claimed they were charged double commission and grading fees and their receipts were below those obtained by producers who marketed eggs In Chrlstchurch. The Minister alleged that a big black market In eggs was developing in Auckland and Wellington which was draining eggs away from the distributing channels. He promised . to have an Inquiry made, but gave no Indication that any relief would be forthcoming. Because of shipping and overseas requirements, he said, Auckland and Wellington had an extra demand for ec«s. If a man In Christcburch or elsewhere had to go without an egg for breakfast, it was no sacrifice compared with the hardships the seamen who brought goods to the Dominion and took away our produce had to suffer. The position had become desperate in Auckland and Wellington and there were no egKs at times. "The opinion of the War Cabinet Is that the regulations will have to be more drastic to force all eggs through the distributing channels," said Mr. Barclay. "There will be a shortage of eggs for pulp and evervB thing this year. We have to claim ■ some of the eggs from Christchurch H ahd Dunedin for shipping and oversens export to the soldiers."
