DOES "UNITY" UNITE?
Britain has had a "national" Government for two years. And yet last week's cables reported "party disputes are raging in Britain ... a fierce struggle for political power is going on behind the scenes." So much for national Government. For two years Britain's national Government has been held up as a model for New Zealand. It just shows that two-party government doesn't necessarily mean unity, or better government. And if the two parties only unite because they think the puolic is tired of their squabbles, then they will squabble privately in the Cabinet room instead of publicly in Parliament. The only thing the two parties can agree about is the war effort, and that is why the war effort is not seriously impaired by the party divisions, either here or in Britain. A pretence of unity, with eyes on th£ next election, will not help. Further, if both parties shared the responsibility, injustices, abuse of the censorship and other wartime powers might be much more difficult to expose. E. SATCHELL.
