WASTE RECLAMATION

DOMINION DRIVE

CANTERBURY'S LARGE QUOTA

(0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day.

Canterbury has contributed considerably more than one-third of the Dominion's total in the drive for waste metals conducted in New Zealand during the 12 months ended in March. Of the £9700 realised from the sale of recovered waste, the province's share was £3500, said Mr. J. W Collins, deputy-chairman of the National Council for the Reclamation of Waste Materials. For the 21 months during which the scheme had been operating, the Dominion total had reached £15,000, he said. "I have had the privilege of studying the various activities of the local reclamation board, and the work and facilities provided are outstanding," said Mr. Collins. Canterbury appeared to possess yards and depots for sorting and classifying material collected which he had not seen in other centres, and this had placed the province in a leading position as far as the volume and the value of the goods were concerned. Giving comparative figures, Mr. Collins said that £2055 had been realised in Christchurch from the sale of waste metal to local industries, against £572 in Wellington, the next highest total. Christchurch led with the sale of rags, £390 being raised, with Wellington (£383) a close second. Both cities had collected large quantities of bottles, and Wellington, where a special drive had brought in more than 2.000,000, worth £634, compared with i.295 from Christchurch. . . . "The main purpose of my visit is to meet and congratulate the Canterbury executive on its splendid work, and to request that during the coming year efforts be made to surpass the expectations of the council," concluded Mr. Collins. The sum of about £3600 will be made available to the Canterbury Patriotic Provincial Council funds irom the contribution last year, itf.m expected.
