ANOTHER ATTEMPT

PLACING OF PIPELINE

WATER FOR NORTH SHORE

Steps to lay the pipeline across ;thei upper portion of the harbour •to supply the North Shore areas with city water are likely to be taken in . about a fortnight's time.

A, recent effort<was made to carry out'the work, and*l2oo feet of pipe ~was. coupled up, floated off the foreshore and manoeuvredt into position jfor sinking. When the operation was almost completed, an unexpected set of the tide caused a joint in the pipe to break, and one half of it sank in 30 feet of water. The other half was kept afloat and hauled back on to the Hobsonville foreshore. Since then the sunken portion has been raised.

When city water was supplied to Birkenhead in 1934 a 6in pipeline was laid across the harbour from the foot of Garnet Road, at Grey Lynn, to the vicinity of Kauri Point. The under-water section was half a mile, and at one place there was a depth of 80 feet. Although difficult, this operation was carried out by the city waterworks department without a hitch.

The city waterworks engineer, Mr. A. D. Mead, said to-day that gangs were engaged in laying pipes on the North Shore side to connect with the proposed reservoir at Birkenhead. Difficulties were being experienced in getting necessary labour and material.
