FAILED TO REPORT
KAITAIA MAN SENTENCED
(0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. Stating that he would be prepared to take up a rifle to defend his country or go into the Home Guard and fight, Edward Marinkovich told Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., at Kaitaia, that he refused to do any hard walking or training. For failure to report for military service Marinkovich was sentenced to a month's imprisonment and was committed to a defaulters' camp. The evidence showed that he had been willing to undertake training until after an accident in which a horse fell on him. Asked to furnish a doctor's certificate supporting the excuse of ill-health which he gave to the army authorities, Marinkovich failed to do so.
The Magistrate: You were ordered into hospital and refused when everyone was required to do his part. Defiance of military obligations cannot be tolerated.
