TIMBER INDUSTRY
DEFENCE WORKS DEMANDS
REGISTRATION OF MANPOWER
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day.
The construction of military camps and other defence works has placed heavy demands on the timber industry. Therefore every possible effort must be made to maintain supplies of timber, said the Minister of National Service, Mr. Semple, to-day, when announcing that an order had been Issued requiring the registration by May 14 of persons between the ages of 18 and 65 who, during the past 15 years, had been employed for an aggregate of 12 months in a sawmill, box factory, at timber felling, splitting, carting logs, or firewood cutting. The purpose is to direct them, when necessary, into work of national importance. The procedure adopted follows the course taken with the engineering and building industries, and the same classes are exempted, namely, those already registered, those in the forces, invalids, and Inmates of institutions.
