Care of Potatoes
Seed potatoes will probably be scarce next season, and the wise gardener will no doubt keep his own. Small potatoes, about the size of an egg, make the best seed, and should be stored in a dry dark and cool place. The tubers should be given a few hours to dry after being dug, but at no time should they be left exposed at night, or they will inevitably be attacked by the potato tuber moth, which is a night flier and lays its eggs in the eyes. The grubs, on hatching, riddle the tubers with holes. Where the pest is very prevalent, as was obvious from a letter from a Mangere gardeivjf, it is a good plan to spray the tofs with arsenate of lead a week before digging the potatoes.
