REMANDED FOR SENTENCE
(0.C.) HAMILTON, Wednesday.
Five charges of receiving sums totalling £133 and failing to account for the money his employers, the Rangatira Service Station, Limited, Taumarunui, thereby committing theft, were preferred against Thirlwall King Hayward, aged 42, before Mr. Justice Johnston at Hamilton to-day. Mr. FitzGerald prosecuted, and Mr. Johnson appeared for the prisoner, who pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given that Hayward acted as service station manager at Taumarunui. When an inspection was made shortages were found. The jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts and added a strong recommendation to mercy owing to the laxity of control exercised by Hayward's employer.
