CHANGE OF OFFICE

LEAGUE PRESIDENT

RETIRES FROM CHAIRMANSHIP

A complimentary social was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Grey Campbell by the various departments of the Rugby League last evening, at the Lewis Eady Hall, upon his retirement as chairman of that body. The gathering was presided over by Mr. J. W. Watson, the new chairman. There was a large attendance of supporters and friends besides representatives of other winter sports. The main presentation of the evening was made by Mr. E. J. Phelan, deputychairman, who has been associated with Mr. Campbell for many years. Mr. Phelan related many instances of the business sagacity of the retiring chairman, who had put into the management of the code all his powers and talents. A silver tea service formed a part of the presentation. Mr. Phelan also spoKe of the assistance Mrs. Campbell had given in looking after Mr. Campbell.

Other presentations were: Junior Board (secretary's satchel), schoolboys (dinner service), ladies (barometer), referees (clock), and senior clubs (two fireside chairs).

Mr. Les Bull, in making the referees' presentation, said that Mr. Campbell, having had experience as a referee, was the ideal man to have been put in charge of the game of League.

Messrs*. F. T. McAneny, .C. Howe, V. Rose and Mrs. Ivan Culpan also spoke of the happy associations they had with Mr. Campbell.

"1 would like to pay a high tribute to the sportsmanship of Mr. Campbell," said -Mr. A. A. Baker, chairman of the Auckland lUigby Union. "It had been a pleasure to have worked with him in the interests of sport generally."

Mr. F. Baker, chairman of the Auckland Football Association, said Mr. Campbell s common sense had made for harmonious relations among the winter sportsmen.

"First, let me say quite simply, thank you," said Air. Campbell in his reply. "I am deeply touched by all that has been said. I tried to do my best. I must pay a tribute to the great work done by Mr. Ivan Culpan as secretary and Mr. J. K. Knowling as treasurer — no executive head could wish for better 'seconds.' Teamwork has been a feature of my association with the code, and that -nade the job easy. And, of course, Mrs. Campbell has been a wonderful helpmate."
