MAY ENLIST FOR SERVICE

In response to requests by many subjects of Allied and neutral countries now resident in New Zealand, the Government has decided that, subject to certain conditions, such persons may in future enlist in the army or air force for service overseas or in New Zealand.

Announcing this, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, said it had been arranged that an application for enlistment in the army could be made at any army office. An investigation would then be made and as soon as this was completed the applicant would be informed whether his enlistment could be accepted or not.

An applicant for enlistment in the air force would apply direct to Air Headquarters, Wellington, in the same way as any other person who wished to join the air force. In the case of volunteers for the Home Guard, it would be necessary for application to be made to the nearest unit.

The Minister added that, in order to avoid any difficulties or complications that might arise with the Government of any applicant's own country, or in connection with his rights, privileges and obligations as a subject of that country, by requiring him to take the usual oath of allegiance to the King it had been decided that this would be dispensed with.
