CHANNELS FOR HOSE

EMERGENCY FIRE FIGHTING (0.C.) WELLINGTON, this day. By the end of this week the work of cutting nine hose lanes beneath the surface of the roadway in Jervois Quay, Wellington, for leads from the six-inch rising mains along the waterfront will be completed. . From observations made during the recent full-scale E.P.S. trial, the use of wooden chocks to enable traffic to pass over leads of fire hose lying across Jervois Quay was found to be unsatisfactory, and steps were taken to overcome this difficulty. It was found that motor vehicles, not being uniform in width, often missed or slipped off the small wooden protecting bridges placed over the fire hose, with the result that both it and the vehicles could be damaged, while fast-moving traffic was seriouslv delayed in emergency. For the next E.P.S. rehearsal the hose will be sunk below the surface of the road, and traffic will pass evenly over wooden culverts which cover the lanes now being cut across Jervois Quay. This is an instance in which no time has been lost in applying the lessons learned in the last E.P.S. rehearsal.
