. He was a very silent and morose member of the military staff, with no enthusiasm or interest in the successful functioning of the military machine. All efforts of his colleagues to develop some topic of conversation or spark of animation in the individual failed. It was concluded that the job was most distasteful to the soldier, and one member of the staff spoke of a shift if such were desired. He said he had an uncle who was a colonel, and if the Silent One wished, arrangements might be made to get for him a position as batman to the colonel.
The offer met with the surly reply, "I don't play cricket."
