LOSS TO EDUCATION

MR. DUNLOP'S DEATH

TEACHER AND SECRETARY

The death occurred at his residence, 20, Heywood Crescent, last night, of Mr. D. W. Dunlop, aged 65 years. Mr. Dunlop was for 13 years secretary of the Auckland Education Board, retiring on July 31, last year. He had been in indifferent health for some time, but had been able to move about and was in the city two or three times during the past week. His wife is at present in hospital undergoing treatment.

Born at Thames. Mr. Dunlop was engaged in educational work for 50 years. In 1897 he was appointed second assistant at Napier Street

School, later serving in the South African War as a member , of the New Zealand Mounted Infantry. When he returned in 1902 he became first assistant at Northcote School, and in 1906 was transferred as first assistant to Napier Street School. Six years later he was appointed headmaster of the Paeroa District High School, and in 1917 he was selected headmaster of the Northcote School.

The position of advisory inspector to the Auckland Education Board was given Mr. Dunlop in 1918, and in 1924, on the retirement of Mr. J. P. Kalaugher, he added to his work the duties of supervisor of manual and technical training. In 1928, he was appointed secretary to the board. Mr. Dunlop held important offices in a number of teachers' organisations. In his early years he took an active part in rowing and football. Mr. Dunlop married Miss Jessie McLean, who was a teacher at the Napier Street School and at the Devonport School. There are three daughters. The funeral will leave the Epsom Presbyterian Church on Monday for Waikumete. The town members of the Education Board will attend.
