SCOUT RALLIES
RECRUITING CAMPAIGN INTERCESSORY SERVICE The performance of many "good turns" on Saturday marked the opening of scout week which is being held throughout the Dominion for the purpose of enrolling 50,000 scouts and 2000 scouters. In the afternoon district rallies were held in Auckland at One Tree Hill Fowlds Park, Point Erin Park and the grounds of the Takapuna Grammar School. Practically all the scout troops and wolf cub packs in the metropolitan area took part and gave displays of various crafts and accomplishments of special use during wartime.
An intercessory service was held m the Outer Domain yesterday afternoon to mark the birthday of the founder of scouting, the late Lord Baden-Powell. There was a congreSatipn of several hundred people in addition to a very full attendance of scout troops from the various suburbs. The scouts were addressed by the Metropolitan Commissioner for Boy Scouts, Major R. F Ward while the official party included the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, the Anglican Bishop of Auckland, the ev - f %- J - Simki ". and'high officials of the movement. The lesson was read by Sir Joseph Smith honorary commissioner and presiCouncU. Major Ward said all scouts should strive to live by the words of their scout promise. They should seek every opportunity to helD others and live clean lives. Both the scouts and the visitors present joined in the singing of a number of hymns during the service, while the scouts alone sang "Taps" at the end of the ceremony.
