AGGRAVATED ASSAULT
LABOURER'S SENTENCE
"I will treat this offence as an aggravated assault and not one of common assault," said Mr J Morling, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, after hearing what Detectivew^M? n .L J -ir Wa . ,sh had to sa y about Watty Shelford, a labourer, of 38 who pleaded guilty to a charge or assaulting Helen Smith on Saturday. Mr. Walsh said the complainant a fragile woman, was visiting some friends on Saturday night and when about to leave the accused offered to accompany her home. She agreed Si^, 3^. 1 " waging a little way with Shelford she decided to get a taxi It was then that Shelford brutally assaulted her. Accused cleared out when a neighbour came to the woman's assistance. She was cut about the head and also received a bruise over one eye. "This type of offence by Maoris is altogether too prevalent these days," added Mr. Walsh. "Shelford has previously been in trouble for other offences." Shelford, who had nothing to say, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment.
