A huge crowd attended a public meeting at the big Stoll Theatre in London to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the Red Army. Hundreds were unable to gain admittance. <^££ neral Gough. hi a speech, said: Where do you think we would have been today if it had not been for' the Red Army? Every German man, gun and plane that can be spared is m Russia. Russia has saved Britain from bombing and the danger of invasion for at least eight months. The Germans now are not trying to wm a victory, but are struggling to avert defeat. I firmly believe the Russians are going to win, and the Red Army, not the German Armv W i U i au , n^ h a , bi S spring offensive'. The Red Army's staff work has been magnificent." Sir S. Cripps' Tribute A message from Sir Stafford Cripps, formerly British Ambassador to Moscow, read at a Liverpool meeting commemorating the anniversary of the Red Army, said: "The courage, determination and self sacrifice shown by the Red Army supported by all the peoples of Rus sia, has been the decisive factor in turning back the German invader* and protecting our countrv from Jsazi attacks. We must make that point of common sacrifice the pledge for future co-operation in the world.
Rear-Admiral Kharlamoff, actinghead of the Soviet military and naval mission, acknowledged" greetings from the London rallv.
The chairman of the meeting said the British people would work and strive for the soldiers of the Red Army, to equip them as though they were their own, which in truth they were. They pledged themselves to repay the debt the Red Army had placed on the whole of mankind. The sneakers included representatives of Yugoslavia. Czechoslovakia. France and Australia. There were also present representatives of China. Norway, Canada and Poland.
Mr. J. G. Winant. United States Ambassador to Britain, sent a message of greeting.
