WOMAN APPOINTED

ARMY WELFARE OFFICER

The War Office In England has I appointed a woman welfare officer to the army. She is Mrs. Ronald Tree, virginia-born wife of the Conservative Member of Parliament for Harborough, Leicestershire, and she has been doing unofficial work for months.

Mrs. Tree has no uniform, but wears a band on her sleeve as her passport" when visiting camps. She is working out a scheme for furnishing anti-aircraft huts in isolated areas. At present the huts have a cement floor, bare walls, 10 curtainless windows, a trestle table and a form.

Mrs. Tree wants to get enough comfortable chairs for the men to relax in. Among her activities is the running of two mobile cinemas with funds contributed by American friends. Thrillers and romantic films are what the troops like best.
