ROOM INADEQUATE

COMMERCE CHAMBER

GROWING MEMBERSHIP

With a membership of 921 as compared with 220 when its present building was erected, the Auckland Chamber of Commerce has been concerned during the past year with the question of accommodation. The annual report of the chamber states that there are numerous other disabilities in this connection, one being that the chamber's hall does not comply with the City Council's new by-laws on the subject.

The possibility of a joint building scheme for the future housing of the chamber, the Employers' Association and the Manufacturers' Association was explored during the year, the report adds, but the conclusion was reached that the chamber's needs were greater than and somewhat different from those of the other bodies and that the chamber would need to undertake the lion's share of any project for the future housing of business men's associations. The outgoing council recommended that this matter be further explored this year.

"The Associated Chambers of Commerce continues to be an active force," states the report, "and is carrying through a great deal of valuable work on behalf of the commercial community as a whole. It is also able to perform a considerable amount of service on behalf of individual chambers.

"During 1941 the chamber continued its policy of availing itself of all possible opportunities of contacting country Chambers of Commerce in the Auckland provincial district. In this connection the president and the secretary visited Whangarei twice during the year and Hamilton once. It is gratifying to note that following the earlier visit of these two visits to Whangarei that chamber decided to reaffiliate with the Associated Chambers of Commerce."
