KILLED IN ACTION
PRIVATE ERNEST LEAITY
Advice was received in Auckland to-day that Private Ernest H. Leaity, of the 21st Auckland Battalion, had been killed in action in the Middle East. Mr. Leaity was a Devonport boy who joined the mechanical staff of the Auckland Star 25 years ago when he was 14 years of age, and for some years before he joined up in the present war he was foreman of the rotary machine department. He vol-
unteered and sailed with an early reinforcement, joining the Auckland Battalion in Egypt. Mr. Leaity was married only a short time before his departure from New Zealand, and. his wife lives in Aldred Road, Remuera. Like practically all Devonport young men he took a keen interest for many years in yachting, and in his younger days he also played Rugby League football. Two brothers and a widowed mother are living in Auckland.
