WEAKNESS OF SIRENS
EXPLANATION BY MAYOR RADIO MAY BE UTILISED "The weakness of the sirens was due to several causes," said the Mayor, Mr. J. A., C. Allum, chief warden, to-day, "and we must find some way to improve them. In an area as large as Auckland it is extremely difficult to find the best places to erect the alarms, but the test this morning proved that in case of an emergency Aucklanders could rise to the occasion.
"One hundred warning signals have already . been erected and another 10 electrically-driven sirens are on order," continued Mr. Allum.. ''Unfortunately "many of the devices have been installed in petrol stations which usually maintain a 24-hour service, but owing to the petrol restrictions these points were not manned this morning." E.P.S. workers had arrived at the Town Hall headquarters within 15 minutes of the sounding of the sirens this morning, and considering that .many had to walk it was his opinion, said Mr. Allum, that the test had performed its purpose. It had revealed minor faults and these would be promptly dealt with.
