FIRE GUARDS

PROTECTION OF AEMISES

In connection. with. provision of fire guards for business premises, the chairman of tthe fire technical group committee of the Emergency Precautions Service, Mr. J. J. Kingston, has pointed out, that in a circular to local authorities, the Director of National Service, Mr. J. S. /Hunter, considers that for firewatching, the position in New Zealand, was entirely "different to that of Britain", Where frequent air raids were to be expected, and a continuous service was necessary.

In New Zealand, he said, the service would only come into operation when a state of emergency arose, and for that reason, it was essential that fire-watching personnel should be selected from employees within approximately fifteen minutes' walking distance of the premises. It was desirable, however, that occupiers should take preliminary steps to organise a fire guard according to the special needs of their premises so that it could go into action at the shortest notice.

Members of the public are advised that all matters pertaining to Fire Guard enrolments can now be attended to at the office of the Rugby Football League in Courthouse Lane, where enrolment forms, armlets and registration cards are available.

Many occupiers of buildings are asking if the Fire Guard Service should be operated during the holidays, and the decision is that all buildings should be guarded all the time,. before, during and after the holidays.
