MUST HIT HARD

DUTCH EAST INDIES

United Straggle Against Barbarous Attacker

Rec. 2.30 p.m.

RUGBY, Dec. 22

A Batavia communique states that the Netherlands East Indies Air Force has successfully participated in the operations in Malaya. One fighter was brought down but the pilot, though wounded, is safe.

The commander-in-chief of the Netherlands East Indies armed forces, broadcasting from Batavia, in an address to all officers and men of the Netherlands East Indies forces, said all the men of the Netherlands East Indies were waiting for the day of action and were preparing for that day. The day had come now to take up arms and defend the Netherlands East Indies with all means against a barbarous and treacherous attack.

"Our army has already dealt a heavy blow at the enemy," said the commander-in-chief. "Our navy has shown it has been waiting for a long time and has greeted with relief this moment of the action to defend their country, their freedom and their homes —in short, everything worth living for—against an enemy soratching his claws against our "property. We need have no illusions about the so-called Japanese new order, which we have seen in Formost and other countries.

'In Europe the Germans have already been thrown back by the Russians, and there have also been great successes against the Germans in Libya. Thus we have already begun to defeat the enemy. Officers and men of our forces have already given their lives for this cause, and we renew our pledge to fight until final victory and -to make our contribution to the resurrection of our mother country. Long live the Queen!"
