STAYING OPEN
SHOPS ON XMAS EVE
PREVIOUS EDICT REVERSED
All retail shops in the city and suburbs will remain open until 10 o'clock on Christmas Eve, according to a decision announced to-day by Mr. R. M. Barker, secretary of the Auckland Provincial Drapers and Allied Retailers' Association. They will then remain closed until next Monday morning. .
Some days ago the retailers, in response to the Mayor's request, agreed to close at 8 p.m. on late nights, but when the picture theatres resolved to hold their usual evening sessions it was realised that the matter was not urgent. As the decision was made, however, it was decided to let it stand, with the result that on Friday night last some shops closed at 8 p.m., and others stayed open until 9 p.m.
Mr. Barker said he had been informed to-day that the matter was being dealt with by Order-in-Council, but not before Christmas Eve. so the retailers would revert to the usual 1© o'clock closing.
