CHRISTMAS IN EGYPT
CONCERT PARTY IN DESERT
(N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.)
CAIRO, December 19
Not even Mr. Samuel Goldwyn would have the temerity to introduce synthetic snow, reindeer and sleighs to Egypt to give a virisimilitude to the traditional conception of Christmas, but the army is making a merry Christmas possible for troops in the Middle East.
The spirit of the festival is the main thing, especially for the pioneers Of New Zealand's Middle East war effort, who have already spent one Christmas and more months than they care to remember here. It is a time of memories. As memories are best set to music, New Zealand bands are providing most of the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day entertainments.
On Christmas Eve a Maori party will visit one of New Zealand's hospitals and another party from Cairo's newest soldiers' club. On Christmas morning carols will be played by three bands, which will later visit the hospitals and convelescent depot. Meanwhile an Expeditionary Force concert party is proceeding towards the desert for Christmas entertainments for the troops in the field. During the past few weeks great truckloads of parcels from natriotic funds have been arriving and should add to the general jollity of the festivities.
