FOR HORTICULTURE
LODER CUP AWARDED MR. EARLE VAILE'S WORK One of the most sought-after awards among New Zealand horticulturists, the Loder Cup, has been awarded this year to Mr. E. Earle Vaile, of Auckland. The Loder Cup is open for competition throughout New Zealand by any person ,or organisation and is awarded for the most meritorious act, on behalf of horticulture, performed in the Dominion during the year. A member of a very old Auckland family, Mr. Vaile was born in 1869. He has always displayed the keenest Interest in the preservation of native bush, especially that in the Waitakere Ranges. The fact that the Waitakere Park was selected as
Auckland's Centennial Memorial was largely due to the energy and enthusiasm with which he advocated the preservation of this area. He was a member of the executive of the Waitakere Coronation Park committee, and was president of the Waitakere Park Citizens' Association on its formation, and when the Auckland Centennial Memorial Park Act, 1941, was passed, Mr. Vaile was appointed the only non-local body member of the purchasing subcommittee of the Centennial Committee, which position he held until a few months ago, when he resigned. As a practical measure of support for the Waitakere Park scheme in its early stages, he purchased and presented to the city an area of 700 acres in the Waitakeres. A tribute was recently paid to his efforts by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry.
