STEEL MANUFACTURE
NEW PLANT AT PENROSE
TRIALS PROVE SATISFACTORY
With the official opening yesterday of new equipment and buildings costing £;V>oo at.the factory of Booth, Macdonald and Company, Limited, at Penrose, steel was produced for the first time in the Auckland district. The plant, whioh was installed after investigations had been made in Australia, is capable of eight charges a day, each producing a ton of finished steel. However, it is not anticipated that this rate will be reached for some time.
Excellent results were claimed from .yesterday's trial run. As a result of the embargo on the export of scrap metal to Japan the company will have ample scrap m?tal at its disposal. In addition to mild steel castings the plant is also capable of producing manganese steel castings for high-wearing and impact parts and general alloys, as weli as high tensile castings of intricate pattern. Crankshafts for petrol motors have already been produced experimentally.
