TRAM CONCESSIONS
The efforts of the United Women's Movement to obtain tramway concessions for women between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. are somewhat humorous coming from a body which believes in the equality of sex. In these days of petrol restrictions there are many men using the tramway service in the course of their business between these hours. Why not include them in this effort? The argument from the women's angle will be, of course, to foster the use by women of the trams during these hours which are not peak hours. Whichever way one looks at it it as a distinct smack at the "equality of sex," a phrase I have heard time and again from members of this movement. Why not be unselfish and worry away at some of the social problems in this city. Women can be very helpful, but it is only in a spirit of co-operation with the opposite sex we can achieve anything worthwhile. The idea of tramway concessions for women is so trivial that it looks as if the United Women's Movement does not know what to do next. Let them get on with some serious business which will benefit both sex and not seek to help one only. DOROTHY STUART.
