<S|PRAY pears and plums with arsenate of lead for leaf slug and apples for codlin moth. Dust vines with sulphur and attend HOME to the stopping of lateORCHARD rals. Thin out fruit where there are too many in a bunch. ' * ♦ * ♦ (CONTINUE to sow and plant seedlings as advised last week. There is little time left to establish plants for a good summer FLOWER show, and these should GARDEN be planted as soon as possible. From now on the autumn-flowering plants, such as asters, zinnias, salvia, marigolds, petunias, dahlias, gladioli and coreopsis, should be put out as weather conditions permit. Keep the seed pods removed from roses to induce further blooming. To induce strong frowth afid flowers in the winter, cut ack carnations and mulch. Lift and store in a dry shed spring-flowering bulbs if the tops have yellowed. Tie dahlias and chrysanthemums. A few gusts of wind can. easily ruin them. Portulaca revels in hot sun and can

be sown direct into the beds, or plants set out. When sowing, mix the seed with sfcil and press lightly into the soil with a board. Cover lightly with sand or fine soil. Sow Iceland poppies for winter flowering. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ (CONTINUE to sow beaps, peas, lettuce, carrots, parsnips, spinach, sweet corn, turnips, broccoli, cauliflowers, cabbage, VEGETABLE cucumbers, melons, GARDEN pumpkins, marrows. Plant out celery and leeks, tomatoes, kumaras, lettuce, Cape gooseberries. Attend to the thinning of all seedling crops. Earth up potatoes and spray with bordeaux mixture for blight. To maintain a constant supply of jealadings make fortnightly sowings of mustard, cress and radishes. Prepare trenches for celery, placing a thick layer of wellrotted manure on the bottom of each trench and forking it lightly in. Keep the hoe going constantly to destroy weeds and keep the soil well stirred. Mulch strawberries to keep the berries clean and the surface soil cool and moist.
