TITLE-HOLDER IS DEFEATED BY F. LIVINGSTONE
The features of yesterday's postsection play at Carlton in the Auckland Bowling Centre's singles championship were the elimination of the title-holder, J. F. Benson (Balmoral), by F. Livingstone (Onehunga) and the double defeat of A. Connew, a previous champion, by two Carlton clubmates, G. A Deare and L. G. Donaldson. Besides the three victors the only other survivor at the end of the day was J. W. TyndaU (St. Heller's). , Before Benson himself fell, one of his victims was W. C. Franks (Balmoral), who was runner-up last* year and New Zealand champion in 1939. Leading 19—15 after 20 heads had gone, Franks looked certain to avenge his defeat by Benson in the 1940 final. This clubmate, however, scored the limit to tie the game at "19 all," and on the extra head Benson notched the single which enabled him to register a remarkable victory. There was very little excitement In the fourth and fifth rounds, in which were many easy victories. Although the margin in the BensonNoel Donaldson game was only two points (18 —16), the former had the commanding lead of 15 —7 halfway through. Then Donaldson put in a spurt and played aggressively, but the arrears were too heavy to overtake. Against Livingstone the defending champion did npt produce his usual form and went down by half a dozen points. This defeat caused Benson to be eliminated, leaving in a pair of two-lifers, F. Livingstone and G. A. Deare (1936 and 1940 New Zealand champion respectively), and a couple of one-lifers, L. G. Donaldson and J. "W. Tyndall.
