DEPUTY SUPPORTED
FIRE CHIEF'S EVIDENCE The action of the deputy-superin-tendent of the Auckland Fire Brigade at the John Burns fire was supported by the superintendent, William Laird Wilson, when giving evidence at the inquiry into the fire yesterday afternoon. He stated that had he been in Mr. McKenzie's place he would have done exactly as he did. Witness had taken every reasonable precaution to make the occurrence book a complete record by having two men on duty, but, unfortunately, he had been let down by the staff. Witness, however, accepted responsibility. Brian Joseph Campbell, fireman, said he went on duty when the second alarm was sounded. He could not say definitely whether a ring was received from John Burns' to send all the brigade had. He did get a ring about ladders and people on the roof. He rang Western Districts to see whether they had 3 ladder, but they had no truck to draw the ladder.
