CUP WEIGHTS

Thirty-nine Horses On Minimum LLANDAFF 7.13 IN RAILWAY Of the 61 horses nominated for the Auckland Cup, to be run at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, no fewer than 39 of them are assessed at the minimum weight by the handicapper, Mr. F. J. McManemin. Beau Vlte, an outstanding performer both in New Zealand and Australia and winner of the last Auckland Cup under 9.6, heads the list with 10.2. but as ne is reported to be turned out on Mr. Sol Green's property at Bacchus Marsh, Melbourne, he is passed for later consideration. Old Bill, 9.5, was second to Beau Vite 12 months ago, when he carried 51b less, and he has since had three unplaced performances in four starts. In being asked to carry lib less than weight for age he is handicapped up to his best form.

Seven horses appear in the 8.0 to 9.0 division, the improving four-year-old Beau Pere galloper Beau Leon being asked to carry 9.0, which is the December weight for age. Beau Leon is a fine performer and appears to be improving with every race, so that his prospects are definitely bright. He won the King George Handicap at the Avondale meeting at Ellerslie on November 5 while carrying 8.5J and 10 days later at Te Rapa won the Waikato Cup well from Orelio, 9.0, who was conceding him lib. Beau Leon again finished ahead of Orelio in the Alison Cup, but on this occasion he carried 9.8, compared with Orelio's 9.4. He is now called upon to give Orelio 71b, a task which may not be beyond his capabilities. Lou Rosa Nicely Treated When they met in the Great Northern Derby last New Year's Day, Lou Rosa (second to Kindergarten) relegated Beau Leon to third place, and as the lastnamed had previously finished third in the New Zealand Derby and Auckland Cup that was exceptionally good form. Lou Rosa subsequently proved himself a better handicap horse than Beau Leon, whose form deteriorated later as the season advanced. They met on level terms, 8.13, in the recent Waikato Cup —;thanks to Beau Leon's success in the King George Handicap at Ellerslie—and | Lou Rosa, who was susceptible to improvement, ran a good race to the home turn, where he was fourth. In being rated 111b under weight-for-age, Lou Rosa I is assured of attention In preliminary discussions.

Wardress, 8.7, was second In the New Zealand Cup a month ago with 8.1 in the saddle, Lambourn carrying 7.10 into fourth place. The pair met subsequently on even terms in the Canterbury Cup, and Wardress won by half a head. Lambourn is more likely to improve than Wardress, and may turn the tables on his conqueror.

Second Two Years Ago

Royevrus, 7.11, ran a particularly solid race to win the Alison Cup under a similar weight, and the only thing that can be urged against him is that he has been somewhat unsound for over a year. If he survives a final preparation, the distance of the Cup should not trouble him as it Is on record that he was somewhat unluckily defeated in the big event two years ago, when Cheval de Volee lifted his second Auckland Cup in succession.

Yogi, 7.8, and Volifox, 7.5, make an appeal among the light-weights. Both horses are displaying stamina with age and may prove themselves capable of running out a solid two miles at Christmas.

There Is little doubt that the eirly t T,l U Beau Leon, Lou Rosa, Lambourn, Wardress, Yogi and Volifox.
