WOMAN" CRITICALLY HURT Knocked down by a tramcar at the corner of Cook and Hobson Streets about 6.25 o'clock last night, an elderly woman was taken to the Auckland Hospital suffering from head injuries and abrasions. Her condition is critical. Widespread inquiries by the police had faiied to yield any information as to the identity of the woman up to the time of going to press. The injured woman is between 60 and 70 years of age. grev-haired. abcput sft in height and of slight build. She was dressed all in black and was carrying a walking stick. She carried no purse, but had some money tied in a handkerchief in a pocket.

Leading Aircraftman Noel P. Whaley, eldest son of Mrs. F. M. Whaley, of Heme Bay, who has been promoted to the rank of pilot officer. Ho wqp educated at Ponsonby School and Seddon Memorial Technical College, where he _ won a Hindley Scholarship. Later he attended the Auckland Teachers' Training College and at the time of enlisting was a member of the staff of the Richmond Road School. He commenced his training at Levin, later going to Whenuapai before leaving for Canada in August of this year.
