GOODS SERVICES
TRANSPORT CONTROL
CHARGES UNDER REVIEW
The charges for road transport in respect to goods services have been under review by No. J Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, in the South Auckland and Bay of Plenty districts. Mr. Phelan said to-day that so far as the Bay of Plenty was concerned applications were made for an amended schedule of charges and the operators and users had met in conference to discuss the question. Some alteration in the amounts previously fixed was asked for by the operators owing to the increased cost of various commodities required in the industry since the last award was made. "A small increase in the charges was requested," Mr. Phelan said, "and although no decision has been reached there is every prospect of a unanimous agreement when the authority sits again. Much evidence was taken and there is a friendly feeling all round." Referring to the South Auckland district, including Paeroa. Pukekohe and Hamilton, Mr. Phelan said the authority had not previously fixed a schedule. All the parties, after a preliminary sitting, had asked for an adjournment to enable a conference to be held. This was granted and Mr. Phelan said that there was every prospect of an agreement acceptable to all being announced when the next sitting was held this month. There was much cordiality displayed among the operators and users and he thought that when the award was made a better and more economical service would result.
