BOMBS ON LONDON

HEARD IN ADELAIDE REALISTIC AIR RAID TEST Realities of aerial warfare were brought to Adelaide when a record of bombs dropping on London was broadcast with the first test of South Australia's air raid sirens. Oscillating apparatus fitted to an electrical amplifier system of interfactory communication provided the siren's penetrating tones for "alert" and "all clear." Designers claimed that by linking the system with the city's telephone hook-up and installing amplifiers at vital Jaoints A.R.P. controllers could give instructions when other communications failed. A direct hit would disable only a small section of the system. The apparatus automatically switched to auxiliary power when electricity failed. It could also be connected with the city fire brigade's talk alarm.

The South Australian Government has made provision for expenditure of £250,000 on A.R.P. in emergency. This is nearly £1 a head of Ade laide's population, and little less than 10/ a head of the State's population.
