ELECTRICAL TRADE
APPRENTICES' WORK (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. "The Industrial Emergency Council has decided to approach electrical apprenticeship committees throughout New Zealand, calling their attention to results which were disclosed during the council's investigation of apprenticeship conditions connected with the electricity industry," said the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb to-day. The Minister said the council had drawn his attention to a question which was certainly disturbing, namely, that the examination standard of apprentices in this trade at the end of their apprenticeship or in their third, fourth and fifth years was particularly low. It was indicated that boys were not attending classes as they should and many employers did not take the trouble to find out whether the boys were attending the classes. Mr. Webb said there were probably faults in the industry itself, and the council would confer with representatives of national organisations of employers and workers in the industry, together with representatives of the Education DepartI ment.
